Voetboogstraat with the queue at Vleminckx, a few doors down

Dinner near Spui and Kalverstraat

Shopping bags, museum feet, canal miles: the centre makes you hungry. The Chicken Bar sits in Voetboogstraat, the little street between Spui and Kalverstraat where Amsterdam actually eats.

The street the locals queue in

Voetboogstraat is easy to miss and worth finding. It is the side street with the famous Vleminckx fries queue, and at numbers 6-8 you will find The Chicken Bar, run by the same family. From Spui it is under a minute; from Kalverstraat you step out of the crowd and straight into the smell of rotisserie chicken.

What is around you

The Flower Market and Koningsplein are two minutes away, the Begijnhof and the Amsterdam Museum three, Heiligeweg next door and Muntplein at the end of the block, where the family's Fish & Fries fries the cod. Whatever route your day takes through the centre, this street is on it.

Sit down, not stand up

The centre is full of food you eat standing. This is the sit-down answer: a half or whole chicken off the spit, Vleminckx fries on a plate, a draft beer, the neon glowing on the brick. Open 7 days a week, 13:00 to 22:00.

Time it right

Evenings fill up fast this close to the shopping streets: book your table online (the only way we take reservations). Back at the hotel with tired feet instead? Delivery covers the centre daily from 16:00 to 21:30. Address and directions are on the contact page.
